1. Decrease caloric intake- Begin your journey by decreasing your caloric intake 250-500 calories below your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). There are many BMR calculators online so figure out how many calories that your body burns throughout the day. This will cause you to lose an average of 1-2lb a week of mostly fat. Adjust your calorie intake as you lose weight. Many dieters cut too many calories and this is why more muscle is burned. Just cut a little bit, be consistent and you will see results.

2. Eat more protein- It is a known fact that protein supports muscle growth and will satisfy your appetite. The more muscle that you have, the more calories that your body will burn naturally. Not only that, but your body has to expend energy (calories) to digest protein.

3. Eat every 2-3 hours- Take your total calorie intake, divide it into 5 meals and eat those meals within 2-3 hours of each other. The traditional 3 meal a day is bad for your metabolism. When your body knows that it is in a constant supply of food, it will burn more overall calories. When it is not, it goes into starvation mode and burns less calories. Tell your body that you are going to feed it well!

4. Start a weight training routine- Lifting weights will not only help you build muscle, but also speed up your metabolism. After a training session, your body will be jump started for the rest of the day and burn a lot more overall calories. Make sure that you keep your sessions under an hour and constantly raise the intensity level to force your body to keep adapting.

5. Drink plenty of water- If you want to get rid of water weight, drink more water. Don’t know if you have water weight? Take your hand, pinch some skin, and pull your stomach out and then release. Did it ripple? If so, you have water weight. Don’t deprive yourself of water. Instead, increase the amount that you drink so that your body thinks that water is in abundance and there is no need to store a lot.

6. Reduce sodium intake- To help get rid of water weight, and for many other health reasons, you should decrease your sodium intake. Give up the salt and try to monitor what is in the food that you eat. Go light on the spices and avoid processed foods.

7. Always eat breakfast- Your body has just slept for a long time with no food, it is very hungry. Do not neglect to feed it. Otherwise your body will think that it is in trouble and store your fat to burn your muscle. Your body will live longer off of fat, so don’t let your body think that you are in a scarce supply of food. Feed it as soon as you wake up.

8. Do not eat before bedtime- Your body burns less calories when you are sleeping, so those meals will not be able to be metabolized and used as energy. You can have protein; in fact many believe that it can help prevent your muscle from being used as energy, just avoid fats and carbs.

9. Eat Your Veggies- Vegetables are low in calories, high in fiber and vitamins. Just eat them.

10. Control your carbs- As you begin your day, take in carbs to give yourself energy. However, as you end it, consume less carbs. If you cannot burn them within 2 hours, just avoid them. Otherwise they will turn into fat. Also be sure to avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup.
